A pure bliss called Kishore Kumar

Kishore (Pix from Wikipedia page)
Kishore Kumar is a religion (in a positive sense) and his fans are fanatics (again in a positive sense).  They simply don't do anything but humming, listening or crooning those immortal songs. They sing praises to Kishore, quoting this song or that song. I actually look at them with bewilderment. I am about 40 per cent of that.

Yesterday, I bumped into a Kishore Kumar fan at a press conference. A friend for over 20 years, he told me he would go recluse for a day tomorrow, the death anniversary of the singer.
Wearing a black dress, he said he would not talk to anybody tomorrow and just reminisce Kishore Kumar and his songs. He actually lied. He always does that. He eats, breathes and drinks Kishore and does nothing else. Our conversations never ended without a good part of it being Kishore.
In fact, I would call him in the dead of night and utter a word or two from a Kishore hit, he sings it for me.
A few days earlier, he gifted me two CDs with popular numbers sang by the legendary singer. He, however, doesn't accept that only those are the popular numbers.
A singer himself, he could sing any of the 6,000 songs sung by Kishore, pausing here and there to draw my attention to Kishore's ability quickly switch from a low pitch to a very high one. "Who else can sing like this," he would say, picking up the thread again.

His love for Kishore actually is infectious. I am not good at Hindi but am addicted to Kishore's songs. But certainly, my love to Kishore comes no where near that of my friend's.
His love for Kishore is such that he was actually lamenting yesterday that he could not visit Khandwa, the birthplace of Kishore, in Madhya Pradesh to offer floral tributes at his Samadhi.

He then thrust a phone on my left ear and played a BBC interview of Asha. She told the interviewer that Kishore was the best singer as he could sing with his brain and heart.

I really immerse myself in his songs. He sings from the bottom of the heart -- perhaps, exactly the way the lyricist and the composer would have conceived. I strongly suspected he was quite well versed with the unexplored realms of the heart. He knows the music of life in its myriad facets.
As we depart I told my friend, Kishore is pure bliss and a gift to the mankind.
His eyes twinkled.

Here's one for the road.

Cotton quandary: farmers sell crop below MSP levels | Business Line

Cotton Corporation to open 83 procurement centres in Telangana from October 13

For the beleaguered cotton growers across the country, the ensuing
harvest season will be a repeat of last year’s, with prices hovering
below the minimum support price (MSP) levels.
The early arrivals have commenced in major cotton producing States such
as Telangana, Punjab and Gujarat among others and are expected to pick
up post-Dasara.
CCI centres in Telangana

As the harvest pressure pulls down the prices amidst huge carry forward
stocks in absence of any demand from millers, the Cotton Corporation of
India is expected to start the purchase centres next week in Telangana
to ensure the minimum support price to the farmers.

A work of art is regarded, not as an ephemeral event, but as an action with far-reaching consequences. Born of reality, it acts back upon reality. Young people will argue a whole night long over a poem. – Ernst Fischer (The Necessity of Art)

Mounting debt driving Telangana cotton farmers to the edge

About 80% of the 1,300 growers who ended their lives in the State are cotton farmers
Wilting prospects: The first picking reveal a damaged crop due to discolouration in the cotton intensive mandals of Adilabad district in Telangana - Photo: S HARPAL SINGH
Lakshmi (name changed) recently joined as a nanny for a salary of ₹5,000 per month. “You know, I’m getting far more than what I would have earned had I stuck to the cotton field,” she told BusinessLine.
A farmer with about five acres from a remote village in Warangal district, Lakshmi knew that it is going to be a failed season after waiting for rains for a few weeks.
After investing ₹1.50 lakh on inputs to sow cotton, she realised that she would get no more than a couple of ‘picks’ that would hardly get any income, forget repaying the loan she had taken. She quickly made up her mind and joined as a nanny to take care of a new-born in a civil servant’s house to service the debt. Thousands of other farmers in Telangana are facing a similar fate.
With debts mounting after failure of three consecutive seasons, about 1,300 farmers committed suicide since June 2, 2014, when the new State was formed.
Rising number

The incidence has gone up in September after it became evident that there would be no revival of the season.
By then, they would have spent double their normal investments as they were forced to go for sowing for the second time.
“At the core of the problem is cotton. About 80 per cent of the 1,300 that committed suicide were cotton farmers. The reason is you need more investments to grow cotton,” Ravi Kanneganti, a leader of the Ryhtu Joint Action Committee (Rythu JAC), said.
The JAC is an umbrella body of farmers’ organisations, non-governmental organisations and agricultural experts formed to highlight the agrarian crisis in the State. It has been collecting information from villages and collating it to put the crisis in perspective.
The State grows cotton on about 17 lakh hectares. Though the figures with the State’s Agriculture Department show that sowings had covered the normal area, crop in vast areas had not received water at the right intervals, resulting in poor flowering.
New issues

Now that the season is over, the farmers are facing a different challenge as procurement is slated to begin next week.
The Cotton Corporation of India (CCI) Chairman and Managing Director BK Mishra has said that it would begin procurement on October 10 in major market yards in the State.
But the farmers allege that the number of procurement centres and the number of procurement days in a week are working against their interests.
“It operates only two-three days in a week, forcing the farmers to keep the produce in tractors and wait in long queues. Rentals we pay work out to be very costly,” a farmer said.
MSP too low

The farmers are also worried about the minimum support price (MSP) fixed for the season.
“They have increased the price by just one per cent. It is ridiculously low. The Central and State governments must pay ₹500 each to keep the MSP at ₹5,000 a quintal. At ₹4,100, it is not at all remunerative,” the farmer said.

TS farmer climbs atop tower, threatens to jump | Business Line

TS farmer climbs atop tower, threatens to jump | Business Line

A few days ago I wrote a post about a farmer who travelled all the way from his village in Nizamabad to Hyderabad to end his life to convey the last message -- That the city hardly bothered about the travails of those in the country side.
Yesterday, Sammayya, a farmer from Warangal, threatened to end his life by jumping from a cell tower, not very far from the Assembly that had just begun a discussion on the farm crisis in the State. But timely intervention, cajoling by a local cop helped. He gave in.
His life saved, for now. But what about lakhs of other farmers who faced similar financial challenge?
The crisis getting worse by the day.

Millennials' challenge to print media

My 12-year-old son asked me meaning of a word while reading a novel recently. I asked him to check with the
(Photo taken from this article on a related subject: http://news.softpedia.com/news/UK-Parents-Still-Prefer-Books-to-Tablets-When-Reading-to-Their-Kids-394283.shtml)
dictionary. But he refused to do so and took my phone and checked it in Google search.

This was not how we learnt things. We always kept Oxford Advanced Learners' Dictionary or Cambridge Dictionary. Besides, would always keep an Oxford Pocket dictionary handy on the go.
The digital media is changing the way people are consuming news. A CEO of a top IT firm once told me he is using his Twitter account to keep him updated. "Tweets and retweets of those in my friends' list would take care of my news needs," he said.
Perhaps, he's exaggerating a bit. He'd have a team working for him to update him on things from newspapers. But he'd a point to make -- that people are looking at on-the-go avenues to keep in touch with the world.
For the last 30 years, my typical day starts with opening the door to pick the bunch of newspapers that await at the window corner. The habit became part of my DNA after I became a journalist 20 years ago.
But, of late, I noticed a clear change in the DNA -- the first thing I'm doing in the mornings is to open Flipboard or Buzzfeed or Veooz for updating myself. Newspapers can wait because I'd my first dose of updates from the news apps.
If this is the case with me, I can only imagine how millennials consume news.
Though I encourage my son to read newspapers, he shows no interest. But he consumes news on his Facebook wall. He would take part in discussions on some issues that interests him, quoting from the FB posts that include news sources.
I noticed that the kid next door is interested in Page 3 of Times of India.
Are we going to be the last generation that cares to buy (English) newspapers? This is a fear that stalks me every other day. I know that people would continue to read newspapers. They do require news sources and they have lots of it already on Google Play, iOS or Microsoft's app store.
The phenomenon is largely confined to English media now. It will take some time before it impacts the regional media.
The means of consumption is changing rapidly. But I'm afraid those in the print media have not woken up yet to the adverse impacts of such change on them.

                                                                                                    Sketch: Aman
